"The Death of Evolution"

The Death of Evolution: Restoring Faith and Wonder in a World of DoubtSlowly but surely, evolution is being seriously challenged.  To date, the majority of Americans reject the theory of evolution to the demise of many naturalists and academics and the rise of Intelligent Design and Creationism is only making things worse.  So much so that Dr. James Nelson Black has the audacity to write a book called The Death of Evolution: Restoring Faith and Wonder in a World of Doubt.  On the cover, the publisher and author tell the reader "A growing number of respected scientists are defecting from the evolutionists camp purely on scientific grounds."

Though this the authors aim, to sort of report on the move, he doesn't quit do that.  I read the book because I of these words on the cover page.  What the author does do, however, is present an argument against evolution much like many other books.  The author relies heavily on proponents of the Intelligent Design movement and also on the many moral and philosophical arguments against evolution.

Overall I though the book was well written and well argued, but misleading.  I'm not sure the cover adequately describes what is in the book.  With that said, however, Dr. Black presents an argument that needs to be heard.  His chapter covering Darwin's biography and his major writings (especially The Origin of Species and The Descent of Man) was insightful.  Likewise, his critique of the implications of evolution and how many of Darwin's associates saw the dangers (or benefits depending on one's worldview) of this theory.  If there is no God then everything is permissible.

So for those wanting to know more about this debate and the many holes within the theory of evolution, this is a good place to start.  Black sites all of his arguments and quotes and so speaks with evidence on his side.  Though he doesn't set forth his own view of Creation and Genesis 1-2 (which goes beyond the scope of the book) he does raise enough doubt that even the most ardent supporter of evolution is forced to take a step back and reconsider the foolishness of Darwinism.
